Event Details

Byrde + the b is pleased to announce an exhibition of London based artists Carolin Becker and Simon Harrison’s American Debut, Friday August 2, from 5:30-7:30pm and runs through August 31.

Carolin Becker and Simon Harrison are London-based artists who have worked together as BECKER HARRISON since 2007. Since then they have worked on developing their unusual symbiosis of photography and graffiti to extend the realm of photographic realism and to address certain social and political topics ranging from the homeless situation in the UK to education of girls in North Africa or religious conflict in India. Mixing Carolin’s photography with Simon’s unconventional graffiti work provides them with the opportunity to reinterpret the objects or scenes originally recorded and to add their own observations, reflecting their different perspectives and personalities in two distinct but complementary media.

From 1964 to 1973, the U.S. dropped more than two million tons of ordnance on Laos during 580,000 bombing missions—equal to a planeload of bombs every 8 minutes, 24-hours a day, for 9 years – making Laos the most heavily bombed country per capita in history. From 1975 to 1979 Cambodia was ruled by “the Genocide Regime”. The brutal rule of Pol Pot, Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Son Sen, Khieu Samphan and the Communist Party of Kampuchea over Cambodia, resulted in more than a million deaths and is a scar on the nation’s history that is still felt to this day.

Becker-Harrison’s journey into Southeast Asia was a surprising contrast to the brutal history shared by the region. Both Laos and Cambodia are considered dictatorships and both have been subjected to past political brutality of the worst kind. One would expect to find bitterness and even anger in the face of such adversity. Instead Becker-Harrison discovered a placid paradise infused with the peaceful principles of Buddhist tradition. It was a testament to the power of acceptance and an example of how it is possible to overcome even the most horrific of circumstances with peace and equanimity. Combining their respective disciplines, Becker-Harrison attempt to convey the essence of their journey and distill it into one seamless project. To reflect the importance of simplicity in life and to show its strength when combined with the common sense of an existential faith.

Byrde and the b will be showcasing black and white photographs taken while traveling in Laos and Cambodia This will be the American debut of Becker-Harrison’s artwork.

Please check with the Byrde and the b for the specific hours of the exhibit.
