GPS Basics

Join Steep Rock Association for a hands-on GPS Navigation workshop.

In this two-hour workshop, we will spend the first 30 minutes at the Steep Rock Office (located at 2 Green Hill Rd. Washington, CT), going over the basics of GPS Navigation. Learn how to pinpoint your location, mark waypoints, and navigate to distant areas. Discover how to find geocaches, which are hidden treasures often filled with letters and trinkets, in your area.

With the remaining time, take your newfound skills into the field at Hidden Valley Preserve. Have your hiking boots ready as we plot a course along the trails and seek out a geocache hidden atop the Pinnacle, a breathtaking lookout that offers panoramic views of Washington’s Historic District.

If you have your own GPS unit, please bring it with you to the workshop; if you do not have one, SRA has a limited number available to borrow. Participants should wear sturdy hiking shoes and be prepared for a somewhat steep 0.5 mile hike to the top of the Hidden Valley Pinnacle.
