Friday Afternoon Book Club – “Poverty, By America” By Matthew Desmond
Our afternoon book club will read various inspiring, thought-provoking, and award-winning literary fiction and non-fiction works to encourage thoughtful reflection and engaged communication.
The landmark book by acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond is up for discussion in March. He draws on history, research, and original reporting to reimagine the debate on poverty in America.
Matthew Desmond is the #1 New York Times Bestseller and the Pulitzer Prize–winning Evicted.
The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages?
Elegantly written and fiercely argued, this compassionate book gives us new ways of thinking about a morally urgent problem. It also helps us imagine solutions. Desmond builds a startlingly original and ambitious case for ending poverty.
Copies of the book will be available for pick-up at the library.
