The Frederick Gunn School Theatre Program presents “Pride and Prejudice” by Kate Hamill, adapted from the novel by Jane Austen, November 14, 15, and 16 at 7 p.m. in the Tisch Family Auditorium of the Thomas S. Perakos Arts and Community Center on campus.
All shows are free and open to the public. Seating is by general admission.
“This isn’t your grandmother’s Austin!” said Dramatists Play Service, noting that Hamill brings all of Austen’s beloved characters to life in “a delightful, energetic take on the classic tale.”
There is little hope for the four Bennet sisters beyond “ensnaring” a wealthy future husband, but Lizzy dreams of more than the schemes and games of courtship. A young woman with a bright mind and free spirit, she is determined to avoid the trappings of a loveless marriage while laughing at the foolish antics of others. When she meets the solemn Mr. Darcy, she immediately judges him to be all that she detests: proud, arrogant, rude, and so without civility that she can hardly endure his presence. Lizzy comes to discover, however, that first impressions may not be all that they seem and that she must learn the true character of others before jumping to harsh conclusions. Is there any way to grow past one’s prejudices?
Originally from the farms and fields of upstate New York, Kate Hamill is an award-winning New York City-based actor and playwright. She was named 2017’s Playwright of the Year by the Wall Street Journal. She has been one of the 10 most-produced playwrights in the country for the last seven years running,
