The Byrde the b is pleased to announce an exhibit “Three By Three” of three talented artists: Kenneth Murphy, Fares Rizk and Clark Leonard. An opening reception is on December 7, 2019 from 4:30-6:30pm. The exhibition runs through February 29, 2020.
Kenneth Murphy paintings oscillate between historical and contemporary: here, the long history of male artists depicting themselves in the act of painting their own portraits – from Vincent Van Gogh to Norman Rockwell – meets the brilliant colors and square format of an Instagram selfie. Paint shifts between material and subject-matter: the green paint that the artist paints across his face on one canvas merges with the work’s flat, green screen-like background, partially obscuring his features. The artist’s body nevertheless dominates the work, his pale skin and broad shoulders filling the frame.
Fares Rizk was born in Cairo, Egypt. His poetic style and colors are inspired from his travels around the world, including visits to cities such as Rome, Cairo, Beirut and Amman. The late Fahrenissa Zeid called him “PeintrePoete” while reviewing one of his early pieces. Quoted in a recent interview, Rizk stated his belief that “Painting has a lot to do with moments. It has a lot do with moments and memory. The perfect moment arises unexpectedly and as quickly it escapes.” Rizk lives and works in downtown New York City. He travels to Amman and Cairo to keep the sun in his paintings. His style and sense of color can be compared to Picasso and Matisse, two artists he studied and admired his entire life. Rizk’s work has been acquired by collectors all over the world. His work is in the MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art in Yinchuan China as well as the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman, Jordan.
Clark Leonard is an up and coming local photographer who specializes in small format landscapes, ocean views and nature photography. He captures the everchanging natural world which inspires and holds a strong fascination for him. His photos reflect the peace and strength found in oceanscapes and in the natural world.
