Every Child Matters: Orange Shirt Printing Workshop

The Orange Shirt Project originated in Canada and is designed to commemorate the residential school experience in Indigenous communities, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. The name for this project is based on the lived experiences of Phyllis Webstad (Northern Secwpemc from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation), who recalls the first day attending a residential school. Among other things, Phyllis was forbidden from wearing her personal clothes, including her favorite orange shirt.

Orange Shirt Day has been observed on September 30 in Indigenous communities throughout North America, and is observed in Canada as a National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Join the IAIS Education Department for a workshop in which participants will print their own orange shirts with designs relating to this important cause, such as the slogan “Every Child Matters.” Learn about the legacy of residential and boarding schools in Indigenous communities while printing your very own orange shirt to wear on Orange Shirt Day. A portion of the proceeds from this workshop will be donated to the Orange Shirt Society.

Please note: Due to the history of residential schools in indigenous communities, the discussions during this workshop might trigger strong emotions for some participants.
