Event Details

The Gunn Memorial Library will be hosting author Roberta Satow Wool of Washington and Manhattan who will lead a talk and book signing on her recently published book, Our Time is Up, on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 1:00 PM.

Rose Winer is having panic attacks about a man climbing in the window and raping her. Graduating early from Berkeley, where free speech and free love are rampant in 1966, she returns to New York hoping that sleeping in her parents’ house will make her feel safe. When that doesn’t work, she begins psychoanalysis. Our Time is Up explores Jewish guilt from a woman’s point of view.

When Rose begins psychoanalysis with Joan Wiseman, her life is changed forever. Through their turbulent relationship, Rose is transformed from a wounded, angry, and sexually insecure girl to a psychoanalyst and university professor at ease with herself. But when her critical Jewish mother has a stroke and Joan gets cancer, all of Rose’s progress is put to the test.
Roberta Satow, Ph.D. is a practicing psychoanalyst, Senior Member of the National Psychological Association for Psychotherapy, and Professor Emerita of Sociology at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. In addition to her non-fiction books Gender and Social Life (Allyn & Bacon, 2000) and Doing the Right Thing: Taking Care of Your Elderly Parents Even if They Didn’t Take Care of You (Tarcher/Penguin 2006), she has written a novel Two Sisters of Coyoacan (2017). She wrote articles on sociological and psychoanalytic subjects for Psychoanalytic Review and Partisan Review.
