Karen Pepper’s “Abstract Discoveries” Exhibit

A dazzling new collection of abstract paintings by noted Connecticut artist Karen Pepper will be on display at Gunn Memorial Library’s Stairwell Gallery in Washington, CT from June 5th through July 10th. There will be a socially-distanced reception to meet the artist on Saturday, June 5th from 10am to 12pm.

Pepper’s mixed-media painting are distinguished by bold color and exciting movement suggested by sweeping marks of oil pastel or pencil. “I like to approach my work almost like an archeological dig,” says Pepper. “Once I start applying paint, I like to scrape it away so that my original marks and color sneak out from the heavier top layer of oil paint.”

Pepper studied art at the University of Hawaii and earned a BA degree in art education at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. She and her husband lived in Switzerland for seven years where she taught painting at the American College. During that time, she visited art museums throughout Europe. Among the painters who have influenced her the most are William de Kooning, Arshile Gorky and Anslem Keifer.
