“Whether in drawing, painting or printmaking, the process for me is about layering and energizing space in such a way that objects are fluid, interconnected and full of energy and movement. I try to use a variety of lines, marks and media to suggest both stasis and openness to possibility and transformation. As I attempt to describe the multiple realities which intermingle in memory, imagination and daily life, images emerge and diverge — reconfiguring in new relationships.”

The Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens is pleased to welcome “In Transit,” an art exhibition by Jeff McCracken on view beginning Friday, May 2.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 3 to 5 pm. The public is invited to attend.
The paintings in this show demonstrate a mastery of realism, mood, and human presence.
The foundation of McCracken’s practice is linked to being emotionally influenced by the story each individual conveys. His subway series of paintings focus on individuals being private in a public place, capturing that fleeting moment when their inner humanity is revealed regardless of who they are or where they’re from.

On Display: May 3 – June 1, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 3 from 4-6 pm
One week a year, six local artists get together and paint at Onadune, a sprawling family house in Rhode Island. A giant porch, surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic, serves as their studio. The painters met fifteen years ago at the Washington Art Association, in Ira Barkoff’s class, and have continued sharing their work and ideas ever since.
While the artists have very different styles, interpretations, and backgrounds in the arts, the artwork created at Onadune shares a singular flavor of salt air and light. This special place has given the artists the rare opportunity to paint from dawn to dusk, follow their instincts while supported by each other, and has cemented the bond forged at the Washington Art Association.
The exhibit brings the viewer to Onadune and shows how six different artists have used
the same place for inspiration and personal artistic growth. The artists:
Joanne Conant
A jeweler and recognized enamellist, Joanne brought her talent to seascapes fifteen years ago and never looked back. A resident of Newtown and a former teacher at Brookfield Craft center, she is well known for her cloisonné enamels and jewelry and brings much of that sensibility to her paintings.
Elizabeth MacDonald
After Elizabeth worked as an actor in Seattle, she moved to her Bridgewater residence and started her journey with clay. She is known for her vessels, large scale mosaics, sculptures, and paintings on clay. Her time at Onadune has expanded her paintings on slate as well as canvas.
Ronnie Maddalena
A graphic designer living in Warren, Ronnie contributes her graphics skills to many important corporate and local causes, including The Farmer’sTable. Ronnie creates brilliant and exuberant still lifes, both found and arranged.
Kathleen Love Mooney
A resident of West Cornwall, Kathleen started her career as a fashion designer in NYC designing clothing on silk that she hand-painted. Her focus is painting landscapes; she continues to paint everything she sees.
Karen Simmons
Was an architect in NYC, and in France, and joined WAA when she moved to Woodbury, CT. Her paintings, landscapes and still-lifes, reflect both her architectural and European background.
Wendy Walker
Has previously worked as both an illustrator and a scenic artist /designer in NYC. When she moved to Roxbury Ct, she started painting “a little smaller” and paints landscapes and subjects that inspire her emotionally.

Event Details
The Hickory Stick Bookshop is delighted to welcome back NY Times bestselling author and perennial fan favorite Marie Bostwick who will be signing copies of her new book “The Book Club for Troublesome Women” on Saturday, May 10th at 3 pm.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Margaret Ryan never really meant to start a book club . . . or a feminist revolution in her buttoned-up suburb. By 1960s standards, Margaret Ryan is living the American woman’s dream. She has a husband, three children, a station wagon, and a home in Concordia–one of Northern Virginia’s most exclusive and picturesque suburbs. She has a standing invitation to the neighborhood coffee klatch, and now, thanks to her husband, a new subscription to A Woman’s Place–a magazine that tells housewives like Margaret exactly who to be and what to buy. On paper, she has it all. So why doesn’t that feel like enough?
Margaret is thrown for a loop when she first meets Charlotte Gustafson, Concordia’s newest and most intriguing resident. As an excuse to be in the mysterious Charlotte’s orbit, Margaret concocts a book club get-together and invites two other neighborhood women–Bitsy and Viv–to the inaugural meeting. As the women share secrets, cocktails, and their honest reactions to the controversial bestseller The Feminine Mystique, they begin to discover that the American dream they’d been sold isn’t all roses and sunshine–and that their secret longing for more is something they share. Nicknaming themselves the Bettys, after Betty Friedan, these four friends have no idea their impromptu club and the books they read together will become the glue that helps them hold fast through tears, triumphs, angst, and arguments–and what will prove to be the most consequential and freeing year of their lives.
“The Book Club for Troublesome Women” is a humorous, thought provoking, and nostalgic romp through one pivotal and tumultuous American year–as well as an ode to self-discovery, persistence, and the power of sisterhood.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
When not curled up with a good book, Marie Bostwick can usually be found in her office, trying to write one. A New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of nineteen uplifting works of historical and contemporary fiction, Marie’s books are beloved by readers across the globe.
Drawing on her lifelong love of quilting and her unshakable belief in the power of sisterhood, Marie’s popular Cobbled Court Quilt series has been embraced by quilters and non-sewers alike. Her standalone books have also found a passionate following among lovers of women’s fiction. Marie’s novel, “The Second Sister” was adapted into the 2018 Hallmark Hall of Fame feature film “Christmas Everlasting”, starring Patti LaBelle. Marie’s novel, “Hope on the Inside”, was published in March 2019 and was chosen as a Reader’s Digest “Select Editions” book. Marie’s books have been published in fourteen different languages.
Marie lives in Washington state with her husband and a beautiful but moderately spoiled Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
PRAISE FOR THE BOOK
“This is a novel about ambitious women and the mentors that inspired them to excellence . . . Bostwick carves an unforgettable path for her characters.”–Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of The Good Left Undone
“In The Book Club for Troublesome Women, the talented Marie Bostwick says this, ‘Acquaintances abound, but true friendships are rare and worth waiting for, ‘ capturing the essence, and the heart, of this story. If you love stories about friendships, strong women, the 60s, and the power of the written word, this is the book for you.”–Marybeth Mayhew Whalen, author of Every Moment Since
“Bostwick’s latest is ideal for fans of historical fiction and those who enjoyed Bonnie Garmus’s Lessons in Chemistry, Kristin Hannah’s The Women, or Kate Quinn’s The Briar Club, which explore the historical roles of women and the challenges they faced within a society structured to define and limit their roles in and out of the home.’–Library Journal Starred Review

Join us for a special screening of A Complete Unknown, the acclaimed 2024 biographical drama about legendary musician Bob Dylan’s transformative early years.
Directed by James Mangold, A Complete Unknown chronicles the journey of a 19-year-old Bob Dylan (portrayed by Timothée Chalamet) as he arrives in New York City in 1961. Determined to meet his idol, the ailing folk singer Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), Dylan quickly immerses himself in the vibrant Greenwich Village music scene. Under the mentorship of figures like Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) and alongside contemporaries such as Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), Dylan’s meteoric rise challenges traditional folk norms, culminating in his controversial electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
A Complete Unknown has garnered critical acclaim, earning eight nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Chalamet. The film is celebrated for its authentic portrayal of Dylan’s early career and the cultural shifts of the 1960s.
Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the story of a musical icon’s rise to prominence and the moments that defined a generation.

Event Details
The Hickory Stick Bookshop is delighted to host Gina Barreca, editor of the recently released book “Fast Famous Women” who will be discussing the book with two of the contributing authors, Mary Lasley and Elizabeth Norton. This event, which will include a book signing, will take place at the bookshop on Thursday May 15th at 5.00 pm.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Famous women become symbols of social insecurity, embody expectations of what we might become, and models of how women should – or should not – behave. In 75 brilliant new pieces of flash nonfiction, “Fast Famous Women” offers sharp, insightful, and delightfully necessary examinations of the often absurd, sometimes thrilling, and frequently crushing experience of being a woman in the public eye. It’s not enough for a woman simply to be wildly talented or sublimely accomplished, after all. She must be fast in her rise, conspicuous in her ascent, and utterly undeniable in her achievements. (She should probably also be cute, right? It can’t hurt if she’s cute.)
Written with wonder, insight, and respect, famous women from Taylor Swift, Mary Shelley, Annie Oakley, Shirley Chisholm, and Lizzie Borden are subjects which allow us to grasp the perilous excitement of wanting fame – or perhaps, wanting to step away from it. To be a woman in the spotlight is to walk a tightrope, to balance on the narrowest of beams, where every misstep or excess is magnified, and every achievement is fraught with the potential for ridicule or resentment.
With new and original short, seductive, and sometimes shocking works by Caroline Leavitt, Jane Smiley, Mimi Pond, Molly Peacock, Dimple Dhabalia, Phillis Levin, and Leighann Lord, alongside other ground-breaking journalists, novelists, and writers, you’ll find emerging authors whose creative non-fiction is appearing on the page for the first time – you will find within these pages a celebration of the fallen woman long overdue.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Hailed as “smart and funny” by People, Gina Barreca was deemed a “feminist humor maven” by Ms. She has written ten booking including “Babes in Boyland: A Personal History of Coeducation in the Ivy League” and the bestselling “They Used To Call Me Snow White But I Drifted”. She’s a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of English at UCONN.
Elizabeth Norton is a writer and singer. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, she worked for many years as a science writer for MCI Communications, the Charles A. Dana Foundation, and Science Magazine. Drawing on her experience with singing, breath work, stage fright, and neurobiology, she coauthored “The End Of Stress As We Know It”, a book about the science of stress. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she is a longtime resident of Connecticut.
Mary Elaine Lasley is a writer and artist. After receiving her degree in English from the University of Connecticut, where she worked as the promotions director for WHUS Radio, she managed the social media campaign for “Fast Fallen Women (2023)”, the third installment in Gina Barreca’s Fast Women series. Event Details
The Storyteller’s Death by Ann Dávila Cardinal is a critically acclaimed novel that offers a compelling blend of magical realism, family legacy, and cultural exploration. It is an ideal choice for thoughtful discussion and reflection.
Set in 1970s Puerto Rico, The Storyteller’s Death follows Isla Larsen Sanchez, a teenage girl navigating the complexities of identity, grief, and belonging. After her grandmother’s death, Isla begins to experience vivid visions of her ancestors’ stories—visions that both unsettle and enlighten her. As Isla unravels generations of hidden truths, the line between past and present, myth and reality, becomes increasingly blurred.
Ann Dávila Cardinal masterfully weaves together themes of intergenerational trauma, storytelling, and cultural identity in a novel that is as emotionally resonant as it is thought-provoking.
All community members are invited to participate in this literary exploration. Whether you are a longtime participant or new to the group, we welcome your insights and perspectives.

Event Details
The Gunn Memorial Library Stairwell Gallery is pleased to present Restoration: Landscapes & Botanical Abstracts in Gouache, an exhibition of beautiful landscapes and botanicals by artist Susan Newbury, on view from April 5 through May 31.
Susan’s work is a celebration of nature’s depth and detail, drawing inspiration from the stunning landscapes, waterscapes, and gardens of her rural New York State roots and her home in Litchfield County. With a background in graphic and fashion design, her artistic practice has evolved into a dynamic exploration of color, pattern, and movement. She works primarily in gouache, acrylic, and mixed media on paper, canvas, and wood panel, using a bright, rich palette to create layered compositions that blend natural elements with abstract forms.
“Nature not only provides the subject matter but the solitude, joy, and purpose for my paintings, creating a place of quiet introspection and restoration,” she says. Her work reflects this philosophy, infusing familiar landscapes with energy and emotion while maintaining a sense of tranquility and balance. Inspired by both the botanical world and interior design elements such as fabric, wallpaper, and tilework, her paintings feature repeating shapes and striking color contrasts for an unexpected visual experience.
Her instinctive approach to painting allows her to let go of the rules, creating compositions that are both structured and free-flowing. She paints in her Litchfield County studio and accepts commission work.

Get ready for an unforgettable literary event! The Hickory Stick Bookshop and the Gunn Memorial Library proudly present a highly anticipated Author Talk with Martha Hall Kelly, celebrating the release of her latest novel, Martha’s Vineyard Beach and Book Club. Mark your calendars—this must-attend event coincides with the book’s arrival in stores on May 27, 2025! Don’t miss the chance to hear from the bestselling author behind Lilac Girls as she delves into her riveting new story.
About the book:
A mesmerizing tale of love, war, and hidden family ties, Martha’s Vineyard Beach and Book Club takes readers on a journey between past and present on the storied island of Martha’s Vineyard.
2016: Thirty-four-year-old Mari Starwood is still grieving after her mother’s death as she travels to the storied island of Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts. She comes from California and has nothing but a name on paper: Elizabeth Devereaux, the famous but reclusive Vineyard painter. When Mari makes it to Mrs. Devereaux’s stunning waterfront farm under the guise of taking a painting class, Mrs. Devereaux begins to tell her the story of the Smith sisters, who once lived there. As the tale unfolds, Mari is shocked to learn that her relationship to this island runs deeper than she ever thought possible.
1942: The Smith girls—nineteen-year-old aspiring writer Cadence and sixteen-year-old war-obsessed Briar—are faced with the impossible task of holding their failing family farm together during World War II as the U.S. Army arrives on Martha’s Vineyard. When Briar spots German U-boats lurking off the island’s shores, and Cadence falls into an unlikely romance with a sworn enemy, their quiet lives are officially upended. In an attempt at normalcy, Cadence and her best friend, Bess, start a book club, which grows in members and influence as they connect with a fabulous New York publisher who could make all of Cadence’s dreams come true. But all that is put at risk by a mysterious man who washes ashore—and whispers of a spy in their midst.
About the Author:
Martha Hall Kelly is the New York Times bestselling author of Lilac Girls, Lost Roses, Sunflower Sisters, and The Golden Doves. Born and raised in Massachusetts, she was inspired to write this novel by her mother’s family, the Smiths, who settled on Martha’s Vineyard in 1891. She received journalism degrees from Syracuse and Northwestern universities and worked as an advertising copywriter for many years before becoming a novelist. With more than two million copies of her books sold and translated in fifty countries, Martha Hall Kelly lives in Litchfield, Connecticut, and Hobe Sound, Florida.

Andrew Moore May 31- July 7, 2024
KMR Arts is proud to announce the opening of our exhibit, The Spell of Time, by Andrew Moore. This is Moore’s first exhibit at KMR Arts. Please join us for the opening reception and book signing with the artist, Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 2-5pm. Andrew Moore’s photographs create a narrative of a sense of place and time as it affects the natural landscape.
Andrew Moore’s exploration of the Hudson River, Catskill Mountains, and New England’s landscapes has yielded photographs of sublime mystery. These images combine seemingly disparate qualities: beauty and decay, fragility and strength, beginnings and endings. The themes of the Hudson River School painting, discovery, exploration, settlement, are as evident in Moore’s photographs as they are in the paintings of Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church.
Andrew Moore speaks about this body of work: “Here is a forest wading into a river. Here, a tangle of saplings penning a private script. Here is an artist in the act of making a landscape, a picture that feels familiar–didn’t Cole paint that? Didn’t Church? –just as the place itself often feels familiar. When the first American painters made pictures of the Hudson River Valley, they saw the landscape as uniquely wild, its mountains, forests and rivers a sublime symbol for the vast wilderness of the so-called New World. But of course, this world was not new, not wild, not, in the end, even that vast. And images of it went from mysterious to familiar with astonishing speed–from painting to lithograph to dinner plate to beaded belt, until the actual landscapes came to feel like folding picture postcards of themselves. And today, any Instagrammer can put herself in the picture. The Hudson River Art Trail offers images at trailheads with the tagline “Step into a landscape painting.” Snap, tag, post–I was here–and then we too become one more piece of digitized data, one more ghost in the machine.”
“Nature is a haunted house,” wrote Emily Dickinson, “but Art — a house that tries to be haunted.” If the photographs have a sense of unease, it’s a fruitful unease, a productive haunting. What is this place? The elements themselves shift their shapes. The Hudson River is not really a river but a tidal fjord; the Catskill Mountains are not really mountains but an eroding plateau. The wilderness is not really a wilderness but a factory that fell asleep and woke up twenty years later to find itself crumbling. This place is not really a place but an event, a location unfolding in time, drunk on its own story, as we are always drunk on ours. And like the train speeding ahead in the darkness, the sheep unsure of how to proceed, we are elements in this place’s story. We have no idea how it ends.”
Moore’s work is represented in numerous public collections in the United States and internationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., the Israel Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Four monographs of his work have been published: Inside Havana (2002, Chronicle); Russia (2005, Chronicle); Detroit Disassembled (2010, Damiani); and Andrew Moore: Cuba (2012, Damiani).

Continue the Journey: Meditation for Everyday Life
Join us for additional sessions that delve deeper into the art and science of meditation—an age-old practice known to steady the mind, nourish the heart, and ground us amidst life’s constant changes. Whether you’re just beginning or returning to refresh your practice, these gatherings offer a welcoming space to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most.
Together, we will:
1. Learn practical techniques for cultivating inner steadiness—anytime, anywhere
2. Explore how to navigate common challenges and distractions in practice
3. Sit in guided meditation sessions to experience stillness firsthand
4. Share reflections, questions, and insights in a supportive group space
5. Build a toolkit for sustaining a meaningful home practice
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to quiet a racing mind—or to greet yourself with gentle awareness—this is your invitation. Come with curiosity. Leave with clarity. All are welcome.
BIO: Sheila Klapper’s unwavering dedication to meditation spans many decades, practicing within various traditions. In 2021, she completed an intensive 2-year Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training program with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach through the Greater Good Science Center, Sounds True, and the Awareness Training Institute. For 9 years, Sheila taught in community centers, adult education programs, and libraries in Northwestern, CT. During COVID, she began leading virtual groups that continued for several years. She started a bi-monthly meditation group at the Litchfield Community Center more than 5 years ago that continues to serve a welcoming group of meditators.
Sheila became a certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor in 2000 and briefly ran her own yoga studio in Glastonbury, CT. Later, she brought her commitment to wellness to Hartford Hospital, where she taught yoga and meditation to both staff and patients while serving as a Medical Librarian.

Come to view the “Once Upon a Time” Exhibit by artist Nancy Lasar at the Loft Gallery at The Smithy Market beginning April 1st through June 30th, 2025.

The Litchfield Jazz Festival is thrilled to announce the lineup for its 30th Anniversary Celebration, set to take place from July 25-27, 2025. This year’s festival promises an unforgettable weekend of world-class jazz, beginning with a spectacular Opening Night Gala and culminating in a delightful Sunday Jazz Brunch. Tickets will be available on March 1.
Friday, July 25: Opening Night Gala & Emmet Cohen Trio Performance
Kick off the festivities with the Opening Night Gala at 5:45 PM under the twinkle-lit Anniversary Tent. Enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres accompanied by performances from this year’s outstanding Jazz Campers.
The evening continues with a special performance by the Emmet Cohen Trio at 7:45 PM. Featuring Philip Norris on bass, Joe Farnsworth on drums, and Emmet Cohen on keys, this trio exemplifies the festival’s deep connection to the iconic Litchfield Jazz Camp. Emmet, a former Jazz Camper, made his festival debut in 2013 and is returning for his fifth appearance.
Saturday, July 26: All Jazz All Day
Saturday’s lineup features a full day of exceptional jazz, starting at 3 PM with the Matt Dwonszyk Sextet. Bassist Matt Dwonszyk, also a Litchfield Jazz Camp alumn, leads a stellar group with Kris Allen (saxophone), Andrew Renfroe (guitar), Taber Gable (piano), Jonathan Barber (drums), and Shenel Johns (vocals).
Experience the virtuosic guitar duo of Pasquale Grasso and Frank Vignola. Grasso, praised by Pat Metheny as “the best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life,” shares the stage with the internationally acclaimed Vignola, making his Litchfield debut.
The day concludes with a captivating performance by Anat Cohen Quartetinho. This ensemble features Anat Cohen (clarinet/saxophone), Tal Mashiach (bass), Vitor Goncalves (piano/accordion), and James Shipp (vibraphone/percussion), delivering a blend of original compositions and classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Egberto Gismonti.
Sunday, July 27: The Finale – Jazz Brunch
Celebrate the festival’s conclusion with an al fresco Jazz Brunch at noon in the Anniversary Tent, featuring cuisine from Litchfield Jazz’s Chef, Charlene Dutka. The brunch showcases the dynamic Champian Fulton Trio, with Champian on piano and vocals, Fukushi Tainaka on drums, and Hide Tanaka on bass. Described by All About Jazz as “a balm for the soul,” Fulton’s performance promises to leave guests smiling.
Early ticket purchases are highly recommended as the Jazz Brunch is known to sell out quickly.

KMR Arts is proud to announce the opening of Diana Weymar: Everything I Touched, from August 24 through October 19, 2024. Please join us for an opening reception with the artist, Saturday, August 24, from 3-5 pm. This exhibit is Weymar’s first exhibit at KMR Arts.
Diana Weymar is a renowned textile artist and pioneer in the growing world of “craftivism,” a movement that combines art and activism to address social and political issues. Weymar grew up in the rugged wilderness of Northern British Columbia, where she learned early on the value of resourcefulness: “Everything we had and did was a creative act of survival.” She later studied creative writing at Princeton University.
Everything I Touched is a collection of compelling quotations meticulously stitched on found fabrics such as vintage handkerchiefs and cocktail napkins. The quotations, explore themes of love, identity, and resilience. The act of transforming stitching into art creates an almost subversive result, more powerful than reading the text on its own.
In this work, Weymar seeks out connections, rather than differences. The viewer pauses and processes not only what they are seeing, but how they are seeing it. These are objects that would not have any value and would have been discarded unless someone stopped to appreciate them.
As a “domestic art”, embroidery has historically been associated with women’s work, along with pottery, candle-making, weaving, and knitting, The “domestic arts” have also traditionally transcended class, race, and nationality. Just as quilting bees in the American South served both social and practical purposes, Diana Weymar’s work has gathered momentum with its “call and response” process, drawing individuals from wide-ranging backgrounds and geographical locations together, as they unite and collaborate.
The tactile allure of the embroidery adds a physical dimension to the art, allowing viewers to feel the textures and appreciate the work that goes into each and every stitch: “What makes these pieces powerful is because the handwork is evident,” Weymar says. “It’s so personal.”
Weymar’s groundbreaking textiles are inviting and jarring, playful and serious, dainty and powerful. Weymar splashes pastel backdrops and stiches intricate patterns to complement the quotations. Each piece invites viewers to engage with it on multiple levels, creating a dynamic interplay between text, texture, and meaning.
Gallery owner, Kathy McCarver says, “From the moment I saw Diana’s work, I wanted to learn more about it, own it, and exhibit it. This work is intimate and human, an antidote to our loud, impersonal, mass-marketed, mass-produced world. This modern world, with its advances and progress, has rendered humans disconnected. This compelling work is an attempt to connect us through words and thoughts.”
Weymar has fostered a sense of community surrounding her projects, encouraging others to send in their textiles or stitch their own pieces. Throughout her career, Weymar has collaborated with organizations such as Build Peace, the Arts Council of Princeton, and the Nantucket Atheneum. Her work has been showcased across the United States and Canada, receiving international acclaim for its innovative artistic approach.

About Mark Scarbrough:
A former academic, Mark Scarbrough, left the seminary to pursue his doctoral work in nineteenth-century American literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has presented papers on medieval literature at the International Medieval Conference in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and American literature at MLA and regional MLA conferences. He wrote screenplays for various production companies and developed much of the original content in the early 1990s for a small internet startup called America Online. Mark Scarbrough is the co-author of thirty-five titles and has a thriving cookbook career. In 2020, Mark published his memoir, “Bookmarked: How The Great Works Of Western Civilization F*cked Up My Life,” which Will Schwalbe described as “equal parts charm, wit, and withering self-reflection.” Having left the classroom, Mark now finds himself immersed in literature, leading grant-sponsored book groups and six- to eight-week literary seminars throughout Litchfield County, Connecticut, and Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

The Gunn Memorial Library is pleased to present “Cover Stories & Cityscapes,” an exhibition by Susan Lerner on display from September 28th through November 23rd, 2024. This exhibition showcases a captivating collection of hand-cut collages that blend vintage narratives with contemporary artistry.
“Cover Stories & Cityscapes” weaves together two series of hand cut collages, each rooted in the exploration of materials and the stories they hold. “Cover Stories” transforms forgotten vintage books into striking three-dimensional vignettes by deconstructing their volumes and enriching them with vintage illustrations and found photographs, evoking nostalgia and transporting viewers to another time and place. Inspired by a serendipitous flea market find of early 1900s NYC postcards, “Cityscapes” blends these historical fragments with hand-cut maps and vintage imagery. Each collage is named after places or vernacular associated with New York City.
Susan is a New York City and Washington, CT based contemporary hand-cut collage artist. In her prior profession as a Certified Flavor Chemist, Susan ‘collaged’ chemicals into unique flavors, but now she uses paper as her medium. She loves the collage process, finding joy in the hunt for imagery, meditation in cutting paper and delight in creating nostalgic compositions. Since 2017, she has shown her work in six solo shows in New York City and Northwest Connecticut and over 35 group shows including Norway, Germany and Paris. Her work has been published in numerous periodicals including “Collage Care Transforming Emotions and Life Experiences with Collage” by Laurie Kanyer and its companion book, “Collage Care, the Method”. She is the co-founder of the New York Collage Ensemble which promotes a supportive community of like-minded analog collage artists in NYC.
Gunn Memorial Library is located at 5 Wykeham Road at the juncture of Route 47 opposite the Green in Washington, CT. Library hours may be found at gunnlibrary.org. For more information call (860)868-7586 or email, [email protected].
